Last day camp and tournament before the Nationals |
Tuesday, 16 June 2009 00:00 |
There are no more local or regional youth competitions until the Summer Nationals. To fill in the gap and better prepare Southern California youth sabre fencers for the Nationals, we have been organizing a series of one day mini-camp and tournaments in partnership with San Diego Fencing Center. This is the third and last clinic before the Nationals. During the first two clinics we did a lot of footwork and hand drills, covered tactical elements of advanced fencing, as well as did plenty of bouting. We'll do it again at Laguna Fencing Center on Sunday, June 28, 2009. The Y10, Y12 and Y14 sabre fencers preparing for the Summer Nationals in Dallas should not miss this series of mini-camp and tournaments. Even if you will not be going to the Nationals, all competitive minded youth fencers are welcome to participate.
This is a sabre only event.
Schedule: 10 AM – 12 PM: mini-camp (footwork, drills, etc.) 12 PM – 1:00 PM lunch break (pizza and drinks will be provided) 1:00 – 4:00 PM sabre youth tournament
Cost (it includes lunch and tournament fee): $65 payable at the door.
Registration for the clinic is available online at AskFred. |

We are very excited to announce that Mihai Covaliu, Olympic and World Champion will be joining us again this summer for 2 weeks of intense training camps. Details about the camps are now available on the <Camps> page. Preregistrations online at AskFred. Our coach Nick Dinu and Mihai Covaliu have a very long relationship, going back to the first years of Mihai's fencing career, when Nick was his coach back in their native Romania. Mihai will be thrilled to share with our students his unique perspective on international fencing, as well as his insight on training for performance. Last year, after winning his second Olympic medal in Beijing, Mihai retired from competitive fencing. He is now the head coach of the Romanian National team. |

On Sunday, May 3rd, we hosted the fourth SoCal Youth Challenge sabre tournament. This was the last sabre event in the challenge's 2008 - 2009 competitive year. Our fencers had the best results yet, winning a record of 6 medals. Also, the best 3 out of 4 results determined the challenge's champions. We are proud that 5 out of 6 champions are our students. Congratulations to the champions, to the medal winners and to all our fencers who participated in the tournament! We hope everyone had a good time and enjoyed fencing. The results have been posted on AskFred and on SoCal Youth Challenge website. To see pictures from the event, go to our Pictures page. We also want to thank all our guest fencers from Los Angeles, San Diego and even Phoenix, AZ who came to participate, all parents who came to help running a smooth event, as well as our older fencers who came and helped with the refereeing.
